Students and Families Build Homes for Local Wildlife

During July, students and families across the Peel Harvey region have been getting hands on with wildlife conservation through a series of nest box building workshops delivered by Peel Harvey Biosecurity Group, in partnership with the Shire of Murray.

Students from North Dandalup Primary School took part in an education session exploring why tree hollows are so important for native wildlife, how long hollows take to form and the pressures created by habitat loss and introduced species. The students then worked together to construct four nest boxes, which will be installed in a nearby reserve. 

Dwellingup Primary School students also joined us for a nest box building workshop, constructing a range of boxes designed for different native animals, including possums, owls, pardalotes and microbats. The boxes will be installed around the school grounds, giving students the opportunity to continue learning about local wildlife and observe whether any animals move in.

During the July school holidays, families in Pinjarra and Dwellingup also had the chance to build their own nest boxes. Participants learnt about hollow dependent wildlife and the threats these animals face, before assembling a box to take home.

Across the school and community workshops, dozens of nest boxes were constructed for local wildlife. These activities not only provide practical habitat, but also give young people and families the chance to become more involved in caring for their local environment.

Buzz the blue-banded bee is off on an adventure, but her day is full of pesky surprises! Join us as we follow Buzz and meet the invasive pests she encounters, like fruit flies, polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB), and feral honey bees. Learn how to spot these biosecurity threats and discover ways to help protect our environment. Plus, each child will get to build their very own native bee hotel to take home! (Ages 8-12)
